The Happy Hour Section of D.I.V.A Polish offers you suggestions on how to become more well-rounded so that you are able to represent yourself well around others by knowing what you are talking about. There’s nothing worse than a woman who sounds stupid when she speaks..ugh! You have to broaden your horizons by exposing yourself to new things so you’ll have a killer conversation during happy hour, cocktail parties, or any other situation inwhich you may find yourself. This week, we’ll discuss the benefits of traveling.
Don’t laugh after I tell you this, but I know of women in their fifties who haven’t traveled to another state in their entire lives. All they know is their neighborhood and their city. Do you see the problem with this? Their experiences are limited because they haven’t seen other places. They’ve only heard of or read about them on television. They’ve never seen the Statue of Liberty up close or basked in the warm neon glow of Times Square. They’ve never felt the coarse sand against the bottom of their feet wading in the Sea of Cortez in Cabo, Mexico. Have you? I have and because I’ve been to these places, I can talk about them in a lively and engaging discussion during Happy Hour with complete strangers. Is there any place you’ve always heard of, but never been to, but want to go? I dare you to book a trip. Traveling can seem intimidating, but it’s not that bad. You can either book your travel through a travel agent or shop around for low air fares.
If you’re not quite ready to fly, take a one day bus trip to the state north or south of your state. If you live in a place like Philly, drive up to New York or down to D.C. and Maryland. You’ll love these places and you won’t have to spend very much money to enjoy yourself. You can always take the train, too.
Once you’ve got some traveling under your belt, I dare you to travel outside the United States. It’s quite an experience to see how Americans are perceived in other countries. When I went to London and Amsterdam a few years ago, I got mad respect when I flashed my American passport. (You couldn’t tell me nothing—in my Kanye West voice!) International traveling is one of the ultimate happy hour/ cocktail party conversation pieces. It shows that you are well rounded and have culture. Although traveling outside the country may not be on your radar at the moment, I encourage you to get your passport and have it on deck! Don’t wait until the last minute to get one because there are extra fees involved and you’ll never know if you’ll get it back in enough time for your trip.
The following website will tell you all you need to know about getting your passport: http://travel.state.gov/passport/
I used to use Hotwire to book cheap hotel rooms and airfares.
You can also contact my girl Racquel Abner, a travel agent, @brbtravel.biz for more information on travel deals.
Would any of my traveling D.I.V.A’S like to share some stories from your travels and how your trips enhanced you? Would some of you bargain travelers like to share some tips on low rates for airfares, hotels, car rentals, etc?
P.S. Remember, everything has beauty—including YOU. It just takes a true D.I.V.A to see it!
