Yago Mo’Nique formerly hosted the “The Hot Spot”, while attending Parkview Science and Arts Magnet High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her first two interviews for the Music Video Show were former Bad Boy recording Artists 112 and Pop/ R&B legend Janet Jackson. From there Yago continued to pursue a career in television while attending the Illinois Institute of Art. While there she hosted the weekly Chicagoan music variety show ATTACK OF THE BOOGIE.
Yago then decided to make a move to New York: her next big career decision. Yago would go on to become a journalist for ZYNC TV, a Brooklyn-based community news and entertainment show airing on the Caribbean International Network. In addition she has made a guest appearance on the TYRA BANKS SHOW and was featured on the Lifetime Television show HOW TO LOOK GOOD NAKED.
In December of 2008, she received a Proclamation from the County of Essex, New Jersey through the Dream Maker Foundation for her Modeling and Business Endeavors. In November of 2009, she launched her beauty line Yagolicious Cosmetics, a jazzy collection dipped in Vitamin E.

I live by this quote because it fits my upbringing and current lifestyle perfectly. My father was and still is in the military so growing up was like playing hop- scotch across the country. It was the norm to have had new friends and schools changed twice within the same season and to skip on taking yearbook pictures. I actually skipped junior high school. I think my mom just got tired of registering me for new schools and decided to home school me. The only thing is that was just a cover up, I never did any schooling. The previous schools I attended in each state were the number one or two private schools within their state so when I had to test back into school to attend a public high school I average at a C. Not bad for playing hooky for 3years…

What motivated you to open your own business?
Yagolicious Cosmetics was developed from a teenage vision I had in having my own cosmetic line in illustrating my version of the art of beauty in addition to developing the “Hue” and “The Look” of my moment. Yagolicious Cosmetics is a teenage dream of wanting to be. I did a 36 City Tour with Estee Lauder which aided in creating the foundation for the Yagolicious Beauty Affair.
Did you have any initial fears or concerns that you had to overcome when opening your business?
No, in this chapter in my life I’m pretty fearless. If I did have any concerns or worries it was just being able to keep up with the demand for Yagolicious Cosmetics.
How did you develop your concept?
The 2- in 1 “Glam Girl on the Go” theme with Yagolicious Cosmetics came from constantly being on the go rather if it was across town or across the US. A far as the makeup line emphasizing the eyes and the lips…it goes back to the “Glam Girl on the Go” sometimes you just have enough time to paint a lip or extend your lashes.
In addition I think that the fans and customers plays a part in developing Yagolicious Cosmetics. Yagolicious Cosmetics launched November 2009 and from that point on they have been very verbal in telling me what they love, what they want and what they can do without. I really just took it from there.
How much capital did you need to get started? Did you use any creative funding sources?
I started with a couple of hundred dollars. I actually started telling people about Yagolicious Cosmetics and product placement before I had product ready. I wanted to create a demand or some type of buzz before I invested $$$$. I used “Bank of Miss Jackson” for my creative resources. (Bank of Jackson- Grandmother and Grandfather invested in my business)
How do you market your business? Do you use any creative marketing strategies?
I’m a huge fan of social networks. I’m based on the east coast but Yagolicious Cosmetics fans and customers are worldwide because of social networks. I love sponsoring events Worldwide! It’s my favorite way to say “Hello” shop Yagolicious.com without physically being present.
How do you manage employees if any?
I employee people as needed.
What are some of your day to day struggles as a business owner?
What brings you the most joy from your work?
I have fun! I get dolled up in “Me” and when people say “Oh my I love your eyes or your lips look fabulous who is it and where can I buy it”?!? I hand them a business card and tell them shop Yagolicious.com. It feels amazing! Although Yagolicious Cosmetics is a business I see it as an ongoing art project.
How do you balance work life and family? Do your work demands affect your relationships?
At first I didn’t know how to balance work and family. Just this year I decided that I will fly back home to visit every three months. My relationships I develop are in relations to my business. My personal time is spent shopping for shoes or a new outfit to wear to the Yagolicious Beauty Affair, a event sponsored by Yagolicious Cosmetics, or socializing with business cards.
Any advice you’d like to offer to anyone interested in your line of work?
I’m a fan of Nike’s slogan “Just Do It”.
