Yago Mo’Nique formerly hosted the “The Hot Spot”, while attending Parkview Science and Arts Magnet High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her first two interviews for the Music Video Show were former Bad Boy recording Artists 112 and Pop/ R&B legend Janet Jackson. From there Yago continued to pursue a career in television while attending the Illinois Institute of Art. While there she hosted the weekly Chicagoan music variety show ATTACK OF THE BOOGIE.

Yago then decided to make a move to New York: her next big career decision. In December of 2008, she received a Proclamation from the County of Essex, New Jersey through the Dream Maker Foundation for her Modeling and Business Endeavors. In November of 2009, she launched her beauty line Yagolicious Cosmetics, a jazzy collection dipped in Vitamin E.

Please list a quote or motto you live by and state why.

“I move around alot. Sitting still is like being narrow minded. There’s a whole world out there. All the traveling I’ve done means I switch from accent to accent and language to language and people can’t work out where I am from. When they ask I say, “I’m from the Universe.” -Grace Jones

I live by this quote because it fits my upbringing and current lifestyle perfectly. My father was and still is in the military so growing up was like playing hop- scotch across the country. It was the norm to have had new friends and schools changed twice within the same season and to skip on taking yearbook pictures. I actually skipped junior high school. I think my mom just got tired of registering me for new schools and decided to home school me. The only thing is that was just a cover up, I never did any schooling. The previous schools I attended in each state were the number one or two private schools within their state so when I had to test back into school to attend a public high school I average at a C. Not bad for playing hooky for 3years…

What motivated you to open your own business?

Yagolicious Cosmetics was developed from a teenage vision I had in having my own cosmetic line in illustrating my version of the art of beauty in addition to developing the  “Hue” and “The Look” of my moment. Yagolicious Cosmetics is a teenage dream of wanting to be. I did a 36 City Tour with Estee Lauder which aided in creating the foundation for the Yagolicious Beauty Affair.

Did you have any initial fears or concerns that you had to overcome when opening your business?

No, in this chapter in my life I’m pretty fearless. If  I did have any concerns or worries it was just being able to keep up with the demand for Yagolicious Cosmetics.

How did you develop your concept?

The 2- in 1 “Glam Girl on the Go” theme with Yagolicious Cosmetics came from constantly being on the go rather if it was across town or across the US. A far as the makeup line emphasizing the eyes and the lips…it goes back to the “Glam Girl on the Go” sometimes you just have enough time to paint a lip or extend your lashes.

In addition I think that the fans and customers plays a part in developing Yagolicious Cosmetics. Yagolicious Cosmetics launched November 2009 and from that point on they have been very verbal in telling me what they love, what they want and what they can do without. I really just took it from there.

How much capital did you need to get started? Did you use any creative funding sources?

I started with a couple of hundred dollars. I actually started telling people about Yagolicious Cosmetics and product placement before I had product ready. I wanted to create a demand or some type of buzz before I invested $$$$. I used “Bank of Miss Jackson” for my creative resources. (Bank of Jackson- Grandmother and Grandfather invested in my business)

How do you market your business? Do you use any creative marketing strategies?

I’m a huge fan of social networks. I’m based on the east coast but Yagolicious Cosmetics fans and customers are worldwide because of social networks. I love sponsoring events Worldwide! It’s my favorite way to say “Hello” shop Yagolicious.com without physically being present.

How do you manage employees if any?

I employee people as needed.

What are some of your day to day struggles as a business owner?

Time Management!

What brings you the most joy from your work?

I have fun! I get dolled up in “Me” and when people say “Oh my I love your eyes or your lips look fabulous who is it and where can I buy it”?!? I hand them a business card and tell them shop Yagolicious.com. It feels amazing! Although Yagolicious Cosmetics is a business I see it as an ongoing art project.

How do you balance work life and family? Do your work demands affect your relationships?

At first I didn’t know how to balance work and family. Just this year I decided that I will fly back home to visit every three months. My relationships I develop are in relations to my business. My personal time is spent shopping for shoes or a new outfit to wear to the Yagolicious Beauty Affair, a event sponsored by Yagolicious Cosmetics, or socializing with business cards.

Any advice you’d like to offer to anyone interested in your line of work?

I’m a fan of Nike’s slogan “Just Do It”.

  1. I don’t wear makeup on a regular basis. I was never drawn to it. But i do wear makeup for special occassions and for photo shoots. I do like how I look in it though. I also rock the fake lashes because they make my eyes pop and I love them. I would like to learn how to apply my own makeup though. It just seems like I have so much to learn aboutit like what color foundation to use and what type for ioly skin, etc. That’s too involved for me at times. I tried to watch this girl apply makeup on Youtube, but hse looked a hot mess to me so I was like, ‘I’m good.” LOL!

  2. @My old church, they didn’t allow any enhancements. I couldn’t pluck my eyebrows, wear lashes, blush, lipstick or anything. They used to say that women who wore makeup were Jezebels. You also couldn’t straighten or curl your hair. Some days, I felt like I looked like a barracuda. I literally had to spend some time making myself unattractive, taking away from my natural beauty. I had to leave that alone. I think God looks at the heart, not the blush on my cheeks. Now I do think that woman on TBN wears tooooo much makeup. I think her name is Jan. Her hair is over the top and everything. I think birds live in her hair. I’m sure she’s a frightful sight with no makeup on. When I wear makeup, I don’t want someone to think I’m a totally different person.

  3. I love the magic of makeup. However, I don’t wear a lot of makeup myself. I like the subtle look…(muted tones an, beige w/a hint of pink occasionally). I also love women who can pull off the natural look – good skin is a must for this look! And good skin starts from the inside out.

  4. I love wearing makeup, I have been playing with it since the age of 6 or 7 putting on my aunts eyeshadows etc. People us make up for many different reasons some to cover flaws on the face, and no its not telling God you dont like how u look. I for me personally I invest in foundations simple because of my disease (PCOS) I have hirsutism thus I feel the need to cover the facial marks, simple because I dont feel comfortable with people staring at me! The extras like the shadows and lipsticks are fun iit bring sout the girly side in my, you are never to old to play dress up, in a tasteful manner not looking like a clown.

  5. Prefer natural ….but sometimes a man telling his woman she is beautiful, sexy, hot, pretty, or all the above just isn’t enough. Sometimes a little makeup is needed to boost confidence or make a woman feel like she is that “diva”! If a woman “ain’t” feeling herself, then it will be that much harder for a man to break down that barrier and convince her she is beautiful! But I guess it’s whatever works for that individual and/or couple! Since I’m the only man that’s commented thus far, please let me know if I’m off base ladies!:D I can and will happly take correction! 😀

  6. I am a former cosmetologist and I learned make-up application while in school and I had a few jobs like Counter Manager for Estee Lauder and Stila. I love how make-up can enhance your features and yes there are some women who over do it. Please please please if you are going to wear a foundation (base) please find one that matches your skin tone not the tone you would like to be. I like a more natural look for myself. I only really go for the full look on special occassions, other than that give me some eye liner, mascara and lipstick and I’m good to go!

  7. @Jeremy—Thanks for commenting! I think you’re like most men who say they prefer natural, but men are visual creatures—excuse the term creatures—but you guys like to look at pretty things which may mean makeup, long hair, and other physical attributes. I guess men expect some enhancements these days and don’t want to feel like they’ve been tricked by a hag who made her face up with makeup.

  8. I always been that person that does not where make up unless i was going somewhere fancy. but i when i do where it its very natural looking..i like mac and i took a class to learn how to apply it properly without looking like a clown…i do where more often now cuz im 28 and i still look like im 18 at times.

  9. I love Makeup! Been wearing it since I was 13! I have beautiful skin…..thank God & my parents! I also am a makeup artise!! Wisdom MakeOvers…..to me it’s about how and why you apply it and how does it make you feel!! Just like clothes, shoes, accessories! Somethings you cannot go outside without it!! Well you can……..but? Lol!

  10. i think make up is the person’s choice and should only be applied cuz u feel to not to look like a star since everyone’s a star and certainly not for guys cuz wait till he wakes up next to u…lol scary movie….anyway i fine right amount of make up is okay….and if guys like it on u cool. but make sure most features are real plz

  11. I only wear eye liner and lip gloss, I recently started wearing mascara because it brings out my eyes. I think some women overdo their make up and as far as sending a message to God about how we look…I think that he made it possible for us to have in the first place so I personally don’t send that message to him.

  12. Oh mine are also to See. I have this Blue ring around my Eyes. And the Eye Doctor tech. Had me Try The Brown Contacts She is Young She Said it would Bring out my Eyes and they do. I use the Contacts to See Far. And Wow They Work Wonders. I Can See Two Streets Over. LOL.

  13. i don’t wear makeup, i don’t like it. Just something else to do in the morning. LOL When I have worn it in the past , I liked the way I looked in it, but it is just too much hassle for me.

  14. @Cheryl– I feel the same way about applying makeup, but I have to learn how to apply it because I hate having to pay my makeup artist to do my face. It’s not cheap and it adds. I may take a class and invest in maekup, but it’s ouo tof neccessity, not because I want to. I like to wear makeupto book signings, talks, and phto shoots.
