HAIRDRENALIN Owned By Valerie Stevenson
Valerie Stevenson was born in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in Upstate, New York. She went to school in a rural community that lacked diversity and an understanding for non-traditional families. She was one of three children in a single mother, African American home. She was told by her Guidance Counselor in high school that she was not “college material” and that she should reconsider going to University. Specifically, the Counselor told her, “Valerie, realistically you won’t succeed in college. You have no father to help you and your mother will be too busy working. Maybe you should become a short order cook or hospital orderly.” She left her office discouraged, but not destroyed and despite the counselor’s advice she went on to college where she took classes in chemistry, physics, and biology – and made the Dean’s list over and over again! She earned an A.A.S., Bachelor in Science, and is currently working on her Masters in Software Engineering!
We interviewed Valerie for this edition of women entrepreneurs and here is her story! Prepare to be amazed!
Please list a quote or motto you live by and state why.
My favorite motto is: “Always strive for an “A” and at the very least you will earn a “B” and if we all earned B’s in life, what a success the world would “B”!”
My mother used to quote this to me when I was growing up and I live by it 100%

I have singularly invented a one-of-a-kind hair tonic that grows hair up to 3X faster than an individual’s normal rate of hair growth. I am the original inventor. Potion is MY baby. Potion is proven. Potion works. It is amazing and Hairdrenalin Potion is changing the lives of women (and men) all over the globe! Thin, stressed hair follicles are filling in. Men are recovering lost hair. What a wonderful growth aid we have introduced to the world! In addition I have formulated several other healthy hair products that are unique and unparalleled.

What motivated you to open your own business?
I never intended to start a business. I had every intention to graduate college and then enter “Corporate America”, which is a concept that is actually fading from reality. There is no longer security in Corporate America but I was willing to join the grind. However Hairdrenalin was born and I am enjoying servicing women and men with my products.
Did you have any initial fears or concerns that you had to overcome when opening your business?
My only concern in regards to starting my own business was whether or not I would be pleasing and satisfying to my customers. Even now I meditate on how to give better service. I do not know if I will ever overcome this challenge since the needs of my customers are constantly evolving. I vow to keep up with their needs and I welcome feedback and questions/concerns.
How did you develop your concept?
I took my knowledge from chemistry as well as my extensive personal research and came up with the formula. Potion is my brainchild and I took great pains to make sure that it was effective and successful before putting it on the market.
How much capital did you need to get started? Did you use any creative funding sources?
This is a funny question because I am asked this a lot. Fortunately I had zero out of pocket expenses when starting Hairdrenalin. I sold what I had in my fridge and then from there the business funded itself. Also, initially my product had no label and I was using paper envelopes to mail the product. Over time as my capital grew I was able to upgrade my product appearance.
How do you market your business? Do you use any creative marketing strategies?
In order to market Hairdrenalin I jumped on board the electro-web train. I am fully utilizing the internet and social media.
How do you manage employees if any?
I am blessed to work with family and they have just as much passion for Hairdrenalin as I do. Often they manage and support me!
What are some of your day to day struggles as a business owner?
I worry and I have concerns for the business just as I would have these emotions for a newborn child. This may seem an odd analogy but Hairdrenalin gives me sleepless nights, joy, and hopes for the future.
What brings you the most joy from your work?
I love working with my brother and my sister. When we were growing up it was just the three of us kids – poor, alone, and insecure while our single mother was at work all day every day as she struggled to support the family. Fast forward 20+ years later into the future and we are reunited again but this time we are successful, accompanied, and confident!
How do you balance work life and family? Do your work demands affect your relationships?
Work does affect my personal life but I know that my family and friends are very supportive of my efforts. They and I know that Hairdrenalin is bigger than us all and that the company is a service to the global community.
Any advice you’d like to offer to anyone interested in your line of work?
My advice is to be unique. Fill a niche and do not be reluctant to think outside of the box. Do not be afraid to take a tea bag from your cup and then rub it onto your scalp! This type of thinking is successful thinking!
