Let’s find out what health issues are killing our brothers, and take some drastic measures to help extend their lives!

I know this is a blog for women, and 99.9% of what’s written and shared here is by women and for women, but, as women, aren’t we responsible, at least to a major extent, for ensuring the nutrition, health, fitness, and longevity of the men in our lives?  Think about it.  As they pursue their increasingly difficult tasks at what constitutes manhood, fatherhood, and brotherhood, our supporting role as matriarchs is to ensure the survivability of our male species.  Are we contributing to their demise by holding on to old fat-laden recipes & cooking habits, using primarily processed (chemically treated) foods & micro-waving foods in our haste to get out of the kitchen & off to work, placating his huge appetite for red meats & fried foods, or watching our favorite TV shows rather than incorporating physical activities into our households daily routines? We have to review our nutritional & fitness habits, or lack thereof, over the past several decades and determine our culpability in the premature deaths of our men.  Perhaps BigMomma’s eating habits aren’t serving us well anymore.

Let’s define premature: 95 years old is premature.  We can all live happy, healthy lives through 100+ years old.  Why the heck not?  Many Asian cultures do. Yet our American brothers barely live to see 60 years old here in the land of PLENTY. Death at 65?  If he’s lucky! How many great-great or even great grandfathers have we known? Apparently the heart attack came two years after the stroke.  Or the alcoholism caused that one final auto wreck.  Or, the doctors could no longer manage the prostate cancer.

Our work to change the dim statistic on the premature death of our brothers will begin once we accept & re-establish our roles as “caretakers” and cease this effort at trying to “take over.” Ouch.  Sorry.  It will take selflessness, diligence, patience, shrewdness, and determination.  The same way women banded together and fought for women’s liberation, and the same number of decades, lives, energy, grit, and heart it took to fight for and win civil rights, is what it will take for us to turn this barge around.

And guess what?  Our selfless efforts to regain the strong physical & mental health, fitness, & longevity of our warriors, will certainly help us to stay healthy, beautiful, young, and have a man in our households at age 95!  It’s a win win situation.  Right?

So Cheryl, what the heck are you suggesting?

I am suggesting that we begin by:

1) researching the statistics on the top causes of death among Black men (this affects men of all races but Black men are at the highest risk)

2) reviewing what roles large corporations, traditional medical school of thought, & our very own government has played in the manufacture & perpetuation of the diseases we as Americans face daily (these diseases seem to wipe out Black men more aggressively then it does all others)

3) educating ourselves on holistic nutrition (and not just FDA suggested), alternative health care such as natural & homeopathic remedies & prevention methods

4) removing the taboo on the use of natural remedies and natural ways of healing and prevention methods and,

5) adopting, believing, and staying steadfast at implementing our new holistic lifestyles.

Really, what we’d be doing is using today’s resources and technology, in conjunction with a return to the simplistic, natural, resourceful ways of healing we once used during our historic Motherland centuries.  We have become complacent with accepting our post-slavery forms of unhealthy food choices & cooking methods & lifestyles, and we’ve foolishly placed our trust in the FDA recommended nutritional recommendations & overseeing of our food supply, and jumped into bed with conventional medical community’s remedies of cutting us open, and shoving chemical medicines in our precious bodies, unwittingly causing our shortened life spans.

Here’s just a few stats and overly-simplified preventions:

Colon Cancer/Prostate Cancer: Within the top 4 causes of Black Male Deaths

Prevention: Colon Cleansing methods such as colonics, plenty of raw veggies and fruit daily, reduced meat consumption, elimination of red meats & dairy, frequent colon & prostate examines, detoxing methods

Stress: Arguably the #1 killer as it leads to the heart issues

Prevention: Meditation, vitamin/mineral supplementation, exercise, community support

Heart Disease: #1 cause of Black Male Deaths

Prevention: Plant based diet, exercise, detoxing methods, elimination of fatty, processed, & fried foods, herbs, reduction of stress

Mental/Emotional disorders: keeping the body detoxed, exercise, community & family support, multi-vitamin/mineral supplementation, plant-based diets, herbs, & a lot of effort & hard work

Whether this article is controversial or enlightening, my goal is that it has at least provoked some thought & curiosity on how we as women must consider taking more interest in and playing an active role at improving our culture & lifestyles to promote the longevity of our men (and ourselves).

Aren’t we sick and tired of attending their funerals?

  1. Cheryl, I felt so convicted after reading this article. I have to do a better job with taking care of my man and my household in terms of cooking better. This article was on point and extremely helpful.

  2. Cheryl, Thank you for the educational piece. You are so right we as women have a responsibility to make sure we do our part to help our mates live longer. Another job of the helpmate. We came from the man’s rib cage and the rib cage protects the heart so as our job as women we are to do what we can to help protect our men’s heart by helping them live healthy strong lives. I don’t have a husband right now but you have given me something to put on my list to have God help me become an exceptional wife. I do however have sons so I can start now to train them in a way to go and go in health. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Thank you for taking a stand when the enemy came into your camp and attempted to take you and yours out instead of retreating you girded up your loins and began a war.

  3. This article continues to strike a nerve because it made me realize that I need to step up in this area, but I think this should be a shared responsibility, especially for women who work. And I also think this is coming from the viewpoint that men can’t take care of themselves. I love to prepare meals for my family when I have time, but sometimes I’m dog tired when I get home. I dunno

  6. This may shock you but out of the many girlfriends ive had not any of then could cook a hot pocket why is it that women dont know how to cook now days .

    • @Mike—hey, there! I’m just learning how to cook. I never really had an interest in learning until I got into a serious relationship and he was looking at me like where’s dinner—Lol! Now that I have a family, I try to get better. But I feel as though the person who can cook better should do the bulk of the cooking, not based upon gender roles. I want good chicken, not burned chicken!

  7. I think women can add a lot of stress to a man’s life – especially if she wants a certain lifestyle. Men know that if he doesn’t give her what she wants, another man will…

  8. A woman can only make a man do so much. Why is it that women get blamed for somethings a man should be responsible for too? I try to cook healthy things for my family, but my hubby doesn’t like some of the things that I cook. The food smell…s and tastes good, but if he is not used to eating it, then he won’t eat it! Older men especially, are set in their ways, and they like soul-food, and other foods that are not healthy for them.

  9. Committed relationships are just that! “Committed”!! If both work, why should the bulk of one responsibility fall on the female? Ugh! For as far as we have come to be recognized as partners, these kinds of suggestions knock us right back …to the 50’s when our mother’s were June Cleaver! I’m tired, he’s tired, and we manage to share the nutritional responsibilities just as we share the responsibility of unclogging the bathroom sink, doing the laundry, mowing the lawn, or changing a lightbulb!

  10. @Keiwaine: I want a certain lifestyle, and have worked my whole life to get it. My husband just came in 8 years ago; he has NEVER been responsible for my lifestyle! *I AM* No one is responsible to provide for me other than me. I want, I work, I get. :). My girls are the same!

    • @Chrissey—Do it, Chrissey! I love it! Does your man think you don’t need him or feels as if he’s not a man because you don’t need him???

      • @shalena: The things for which I *need* my husband, have nothing to do with lifestyle, but everything to do with “lovestyle”. Does a pair of shoes or snappy pocketbook validate him as a man? Gawd, I hope not! We have a “lovestyle” that validates us as a couple, a family and partners; nothing to do with the pearls or silk or leather I wear or the car I drive.

        • @Chrissey—I never heard the term “lovestyle” before. Can you expound upon that? I like that! I’m learning something!

          • ‎@shalena: ha! Oh, I make up words all the time:). “Lovestyle” — its the only word I can think of that describes a positive and whole relationship. To support a high standard of “lovestyle” takes no money, no travel; nothing but mutual res…pect, admiration, and adoration. And when monetary resources dry up due to the economy, illness, accident, or other influences, a family’s “lovestyle” will remain– lifestyle is contingent on material things, lovestyle, on the other hand is contingent on the humanity within a relationship.
