D.I.V.A. ACADEMY:

A TEEN GIRL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Parents, school administrators, and community leaders, did you KNOW that  78% of girls with low self-esteem admit that it is hard to feel good in school when they do not feel good about how they look?

Did you KNOW that 75% of girls with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities such as disordered eating, cutting, bullying, smoking, or drinking when feeling badly about themselves (compared to 25% of girls with high self-esteem)?

Did you KNOW that low self confidence is one of the main factors in teen promiscuity? Did you KNOW that teen girl bullying has become just as prominent and sometimes more severe than bullying among boys?

D.I.V.A. Academy: A Teen Girl Empowerment Program is a community intervention program that addresses low self- esteem. Low self-esteem is often the cause and result of bullying in middle school and a core issue that contributes to the high school drop-out rate.  D.I.V.A. ACADEMY  is a fun, interactive intervention program that helps young ladies who are bullied in some way or struggle with low self-esteem to improve their self-image and learn how to deal with negative peer pressure.

After being in the program, girls will have learned how to love themselves, understand the value of their education, and know how to make better decisions.

BACKGROUND

She grew up in a rough neighborhood in South Philadelphia where young men were senselessly murdered, including her oldest brother. Though lacking positive role models, Shalena D.I.V.A. found the courage to hold onto her dreams of attending college.  She was  accepted to  the University  of  Pennsylvania  and  awarded  the Philadelphia  Mayor’s  Scholarship which would’ve allowed her to attend on  a  four  year  scholarship. However, she attended Duke University instead where she was awarded The McGaughey Higgins Scholarship, also a four year scholarship. She ultimately earned a degree in Political Science and graduated from Duke University in 2001.

TEEN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

In an effort to reduce the high school dropout rate, Shalena D.I.V.A. created an intervention program called D.I.V.A. Academy and partnered with local schools, churches and organizations. Through workshops and programming, she helps students build their self-esteem and create academic game plans. As a result, the students learn to believe in themselves and soar academically. Shalena D.I.V.A. has inspired hundreds of inner city students in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to go to college who otherwise would not have thought it possible for themselves. She wants students to experience the kind of academic success she achieved. They, too, can win scholarships and attend colleges of their choice despite challenging upbringings.
