Almost an 80’s Baby (Who I Be) by Quiana McLaughlin

Yes
Almost an 80’s Baby

Yes
I am
Almost an 80’s baby
Born the last month
Of the last year
In the 70’s
Today
I am
A 29 year-old
Phenom
Not an Expert
Far from being
Perfect
But a Phenom
Just the same
You see
I’ve learned a lot
In this time
That I’ve travelled
Here
On this earth
I know who
I am
And why
I am
(And that’s saying a lot
Just right there)
I know why
I be
And
Who I Be
I’m a praiser
Of the Almighty
I was born to …
Well,
Just to be
And just to share
Me
With the whole wide world
My purpose
Is to simply
Be a blessing
In fact
If I didn’t
Like my name
So much
Well, I would
Defintiely
Change it to
BLESSING
Yes, caps and all
‘Cause that’s
Who I be
You see
I’m this
Colored Woman
Born from
Real lovin’
A woman
Who has baked
2 buns in her oven
A mezzo soprano
Dipped in mahogany
Wrapped in the light
Dressed in sheet music
And
Washed in His blood
Born of His Spirit
I now know
I’m living
Solely to express
His love
Through my words
My song
From my pen
Will flow Him
Yes
I am
Almost an 80’s baby
Old enough
To know that
Jazz
Begat
This whole
Music thing
But young enough to
Still be rocking to Weezy

Yes
I am
Almost an 80’s baby
Bold and fresh
Fierce and breezy
Cool and calm
A light blue sea
Flowing
In a Black world of mystery
And
What world
Doesn’t need
Almost an 80’s baby

Quiana, now that I’m in reader and not editor mode, I must say that this poem is very good. It reminds me of phenomenal woman, seriously. Great job!

I’m glad someone else left a comment because folks are sleeping on this poem. It’s really good. I can see Quiana performing it live somewhere. It gives the readers such a boost of healthy confidence in themselves and God.
      Thanks Quiana!

Thanks, Rece and Shalena. I definitely see me performing it live too. I wouldnt classify myself as a spoken word artist, but this is that type of poem. I will go wherever God and the words take me. It His Word, it says our gifts will make room for us. I truly believe that.
